I should note; My number of loved ones seems to rise exponentially every few months. Not long ago one niece was toddling around and now there are four small humans in my circle, all under the age of 4. <div><br /></div><div>They are adorable and gooey and gloriously riotous. They are joyful and sweet and passionate about everything, even socks. They are loud and require constant vigilance. They sometimes organize coups. </div><div><br /></div>I want some of my own, eventually, and sometimes very poignantly. Whenever I get those achy feelings I tend to look over at my cat and wonder, guiltily, if she's enough. Then she'll do that thing where she flops over so I'll rub her belly, and I remember that she's plenty.<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S7o2IJLkeNI/AAAAAAAAAM8/f_5GBVrGoDg/s1600/Z-1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S7o2IJLkeNI/AAAAAAAAAM8/f_5GBVrGoDg/s320/Z-1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456733412044077266" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S7o2gB2raII/AAAAAAAAANE/Nw2XfX28H_I/s1600/z-2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S7o2gB2raII/AAAAAAAAANE/Nw2XfX28H_I/s320/z-2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456733822394263682" /></a><br /><div>During one of this weekend's more brilliant uprisings--a youth-led ban on the institution of bathing--I wondered what warm, fuzzy, soundless thing she was doing at home. Her eyes are hypnotic gold, and her favorite spot in the house is a yellow-gold chair that nearly matches them. It's a 1948 film noir filled with mysterious mobsters and a big storm a-brewing. What really caught my eye, of course, were the sultry leads, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, who were married in real life and smoldered on screen, without, mind you, one costume change. <div><br /></div><div>Bacall is amazingly elegant as Nora Temple in a simple white shirt, dirndle skirt and espadrilles. This weekend it was Easter, interpreted by my parents as an impressionist mix of deep purple lace, ceramic eggs and woodland creatures.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S7ARRBy6EXI/AAAAAAAAAL8/eVvV5WaA3EQ/s1600/free-vintage-easter-bunny-clip-art.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 129px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S7ARRBy6EXI/AAAAAAAAAL8/eVvV5WaA3EQ/s200/free-vintage-easter-bunny-clip-art.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453878132983075186" /></a>In the process, my dad unearthed a nearly-ruined box in the basement, but he'd packed the contents in plastic. ("Because I'm neurotic that way," he said. I love it when family members recognize the strength in neuroses.) Inside was a set of gorgeous baskets my mom had macreméd from a waxy rope in the 80s. They got us reminiscing over all the crafting we did when I was small; ceramics, jewelry, clay and crocheting. Crocheting! It was like remembering an old friend who'd transferred schools. As a kid, being able to take a ball of yarn and create something unique was truly magical. It certainly still is, but I've lost the time or patience or maybe even soul needed to access that magic. I want it back. <div><br /></div><div>As a first step, I turned to Etsy, via the fabulous <a href="http://etsyshopsilove.blogspot.com/">Etsy Shops I Love</a> blog for some nostalgic inspiration and was not disappointed. Whenever I get an accessory craving, I'm more conscious of what's "trendy" versus what's "classic." 2.) I'm raiding my mom's jewelry box way more than I used to. <div><br /></div><div>With that, I recently acquired her old cameo pendant. I'm not sure why I wasn't drawn to it earlier. Cameos are the perfect answer to looking refreshingly original with a style that's everlasting. </div><div><br /></div><div>According to Anna M. Miller's book, <a href="http://www.thecameocollection.com/html/book.html">Cameos Old and New</a>, the cameo came to life around 300 B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt. That is some serious longevity. Although mine is a lovely Victorian lady in white on a coral background, there are vintage cameos of every imaginable kind on eBay for every imaginable price. A few of my favorites:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S6gN7U0LbGI/AAAAAAAAAKM/rXRRQcsWVuQ/s1600-h/Desktop6.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 250px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S6gN7U0LbGI/AAAAAAAAAKM/rXRRQcsWVuQ/s400/Desktop6.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451622661782989922" /></a><br />Brown on black lady ring: starting at $2.50, <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Brown-on-Black-Goldtone-Carved-CAMEO-Ring-Adj-Size-4-8_W0QQitemZ220574941447QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Costume_Jewelry?hash=item335b4a8107#ht_500wt_1119">ebay.com</a></div><div>Goldtone lady pendant: starting at $1, <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-1940s-Goldtone-Celluloid-Cameo-Pendant-Chain_W0QQitemZ270551186722QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Costume_Jewelry?hash=item3efe1b7d22#ht_945wt_878">ebay.com</a></div><div>Dove ring: starting at $4.25, <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-Vintage-Avon-Blue-Cameo-Dove-Silhouette-Ring-Sz-9_W0QQitemZ260571414569QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Costume_Jewelry?hash=item3cab444029#ht_4386wt_1104">ebay.com</a></div><div>Couple brooch: starting at $20, <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-ROMANTIC-VICTORIAN-COURTING-COUPLE-CAMEO-PIN_W0QQitemZ220576926447QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Costume_Jewelry?hash=item335b68caef#ht_500wt_1119">ebay.com</a></div><div>Green glass lady brooch: starting at $25, <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Vtg-Sterling-925-Green-Glass-Cameo-Brooch-Pin-MTH31_W0QQitemZ270549240537QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Fine_Jewelry?hash=item3efdfdcad9#ht_2089wt_1104">ebay.com</a></div><div>Flower brooch: $10, <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-GERRYS-FLOWER-CAMEO-BROOCH-PIN_W0QQitemZ390166212104QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Costume_Jewelry?hash=item5ad7b7ee08#ht_701wt_878">ebay.com</a></div><div><br /></div>Prim Knickershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607614350714003829noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468516795093335816.post-64037800941726709452010-03-21T07:08:00.000-07:002010-03-21T08:15:47.622-07:00Prim Whim: Heathers<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S6Y4ExppbUI/AAAAAAAAAKE/ml4mOXgWHJU/s1600-h/Screen+shot+2010-03-21+at+10.34.11+AM.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S6Y4ExppbUI/AAAAAAAAAKE/ml4mOXgWHJU/s320/Screen+shot+2010-03-21+at+10.34.11+AM.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451106053677215042" /></a>So my Winona kick is official. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097493/">Heathers</a> made it onto my viewing list last week. <div><br /></div><div>But this deviously dark comedy deserves more than just praise for her scathing performance. The majority fall into the "granny" category, because grannies are quirky, have the kind of costume jewelry you can't get anywhere, and like supportive shoes (For proof, check out the <a href="http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/respect-your-elders/?scp=1&sq=seniors%20fashion%20blog&st=cse">NYT</a> feature on Ari Seth Cohen's blog, <a href="http://advancedstyle.blogspot.com/">Advanced Style</a>). <div><br /></div><div>But while I was browsing clearance sweaters at Target, I came across the most adorable <a href="http://www.target.com/Girls-Cherokee-Intarsia-Sweater-Heather/dp/B002FVQJVG/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&searchView=grid5&qid=1268794076&frombrowse=0&fromGsearch=true&node=1038576%7C1287991011&keywords=grey%20cardigan&searchSize=30&id=Girls%20Cherokee%20Intarsia%20Sweater%20Heather&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Ctarget_com_age%2Ctarget_com_gender-bin%2Ctarget_com_character-bin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&searchNodeID=1038576%7C1287991011&searchRank=target104545&sr=1-22&searchPage=1">girls' bow print sweater</a> for only $5.24. Terrible. Then I walked by my favorite tapas restaurant (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/sala-19-new-york">Sala19</a>) and their chalkboard said "St. Patrick was Spanish!" And I though, W<i>as he?</i> Thirteen years of Catholic schooling and I had no idea where he was born. I know he drove the snakes out of Ireland: the probably not true but very cool part of his story. <div><br /></div><div>Turns out <a href="http://www.history.com/topics/who-was-saint-patrick">St. Patrick</a> was born in Britain (I didn't find anything about Spain) and taken as a prisoner to Ireland by Irish raiders who attacked his family's estate. He escaped and eventually returned as a missionary where he mixed the native nature-based pagan religions in with Christianity. A big part of that original Irish religion was sun worship, which is why the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Filled-Engraved-Celtic-Necklace-Enamel/dp/B002RNDMVC">Celtic cross</a> has a circle (a sun!) behind it. </div><div><br /></div><div>Learning a little bit of history makes me feel slightly better about forgetting such a great holiday. It's a nice slow story about how <a href="http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/">Stephanie Meyer</a> single-handedly improved the fate of real, rainy Forks, Washington by basing <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Twilight-Book-1-Stephenie-Meyer/dp/0316160172">Twilight</a> there.<div><br /></div><div>You won't find anything groundbreaking or even supernatural, but seeing interviews with people living in the real, idyllic place that's described so well in Meyer's fiction does sort of take the edge off that need to recreate the rush of reading the books.<br /><br />I know that's a little insane, but it is the motivation behind my minor obsession, and probably everyone else's. The bi-produtcts our body produces when it breaks down foods that have been fried or baked at high heat (and basically robbed of their moisture) move on to damage our collagen. An example is that a poached egg is immensely better for your face than a fried one.<br /><br />More to come as I get through the book, but let's just hope Demi is ahead of this new diet curve.<br /><br />Photo via <a href="http://www.fabsugar.com/Demi-Moore-2010-Oscars-7635227">FabSugar</a>.Prim Knickershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607614350714003829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468516795093335816.post-50137723901459828072010-03-10T14:55:00.000-08:002010-03-10T15:07:56.302-08:00Prim Penny Pincher: Coty Airspun PowderAs displayed in my $42 eyeliner post <a href="http://primknickers.blogspot.com/2010/03/prim-wish-oscar-blues.html">below</a>, beauty ain’t cheap. But it’s not always expensive, either. Like everyone else, I’m constantly trying to splurge with smarts and scrimp with discretion.<br /><br />So when I recently needed some flaw-covering face powder for a new headshot (reason to be revealed in a later post), I remembered being 15 and walking the aisles of my local drugstore with my friend Melissa, who was a model then and is now. She picked up the <a href="http://www.drugstore.com/qxp19501_333181_sespider/coty_airspun/face_powder_translucent_extra_coverage.htm">Coty Airspun Powder</a> and told me it was a great way to set your makeup.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S5gl18BF7rI/AAAAAAAAAHU/-E9NVpnj8DI/s1600-h/Coty.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S5gl18BF7rI/AAAAAAAAAHU/-E9NVpnj8DI/s320/Coty.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447145357878619826" border="0" /></a><br />Too intimidated to ask what that meant, I marveled over the sweet smell and pretty, retro box.<br /><br />Melissa bought it, deeming Coty the absolute height of sophistication. Luckily, years of chronic lateness have left me with a well-honed ponytailing method that ideally gets me some, much less <span style="font-style: italic;">runwayish</span> version of this.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S4SZRAfw4RI/AAAAAAAAAEY/waehaWp5Xe8/s1600-h/img-thing.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S4SZRAfw4RI/AAAAAAAAAEY/waehaWp5Xe8/s320/img-thing.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441642767240454418" border="0" /></a>Here's how:<br /><br />1.) Comb a tiny bit of dry shampoo through greasy bangs.<br /><br />2.) Pull on thin black headband to keep ungreasified bangs off face.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Stockings/Herringbone-Fashion-Tights-Size-B/ID=prod4185794&navCount=1&navAction=push-product?V=G&ec=frgl_529914&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku4184664"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S4SbVF6S-nI/AAAAAAAAAEg/wJ3GRlakOZQ/s200/07420093697_220x220_a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441645036436650610" border="0" /></a>2. a.) This is a huge secret, so you're welcome. Rather than buying slim headbands that are too tight or too slippery, I use a trick I learned from my field hockey team in Catholic high school. Any time a pair of our school-mandated opaque tights got a runner, we would cut them into headbands for hockey practice. You just smooth the tights out flat and cut a 1" to 2" strip straight across the thigh. Tug on it a little to stretch it out, and it will curl up into a nice thin, perfectly stretchy headband. Move your next cut up or down the thigh to make tighter or looser versions.<br /><br />3.) Don't bother brushing. Tie the rest up onto the crown of your head and pull it tight to pouf up the top.<br /><br />This process takes about a minute and a half and usually gets me by, as long as I put in contacts and wear tons of mascara.<br /><br />However, there was no time for contacts. I resorted to my plastic-framed geeky chic glasses, normally saved strictly for amazing hair days in the style of an <a href="http://www.oliverpeoples.com/">Oliver Peoples</a> ad campaign.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S4ScAZDgA6I/AAAAAAAAAEo/NQeE769PclE/s1600-h/73912237-01.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 262px; height: 265px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S4ScAZDgA6I/AAAAAAAAAEo/NQeE769PclE/s320/73912237-01.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441645780309902242" border="0" /></a>And what was I late for? Two beauty events. These are meetings teeming with women who know everything about how to look good. I have been given the stink eye before. And the evil eye. I hoped to hide in a dark corner.<br /><br />And then, the impossible. Multiple compliments on my hair! One beauty editor even told me she could, "never pull that off." Not <i>would</i> never, <i>could</i> never. Huge difference... I think. <div><br />Photo <a href="http://www.hairstyleslibrary.com/tag/hairstyle/">via</a>.</div>Prim Knickershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607614350714003829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468516795093335816.post-72457315016170156162010-02-17T16:06:00.000-08:002010-02-19T08:17:49.419-08:00Prim Wish: Jason Wu for Madame Alexander<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3zI2xBMmDI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/6zh77F04E3o/s1600-h/MTR9525lg.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3zI2xBMmDI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/6zh77F04E3o/s200/MTR9525lg.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439443293153564722" border="0" /></a>At 6, I told my mom that I would one day sew myself a life-size replica of Barbie's <a href="http://www.barbiecollector.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=R9525">Peaches n' Cream</a> dress and wear it always. I vastly overestimated my adult sewing skills.<br /><br />These poseable little ladies (16") won't be available until August, but feast your eyes in the meantime.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yF0s5SWDI/AAAAAAAAADw/OnznLB4Q4kU/s1600-h/Blu+Belle.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 189px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yF0s5SWDI/AAAAAAAAADw/OnznLB4Q4kU/s320/Blu+Belle.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439369590407845938" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yE58wuwwI/AAAAAAAAADg/aOT8DA4D9uw/s1600-h/Bon+Bon.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 208px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yE58wuwwI/AAAAAAAAADg/aOT8DA4D9uw/s320/Bon+Bon.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439368581054644994" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yFigyn6dI/AAAAAAAAADo/DYBsQSFnnkk/s1600-h/L%27Enfant+Terrible.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 201px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yFigyn6dI/AAAAAAAAADo/DYBsQSFnnkk/s320/L%27Enfant+Terrible.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439369277921028562" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yGTqPjQ4I/AAAAAAAAAEI/Ivpv__t61qk/s1600-h/Vice.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 312px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yGTqPjQ4I/AAAAAAAAAEI/Ivpv__t61qk/s320/Vice.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439370122271867778" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yF-heqxMI/AAAAAAAAAD4/UbI0MYfXr2A/s1600-h/Envy.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 251px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yF-heqxMI/AAAAAAAAAD4/UbI0MYfXr2A/s320/Envy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439369759142102210" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yGLHvqgvI/AAAAAAAAAEA/Y7ILiSSuxSg/s1600-h/Lust.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3yGLHvqgvI/AAAAAAAAAEA/Y7ILiSSuxSg/s320/Lust.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439369975572366066" border="0" /></a>Prim Knickershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607614350714003829noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468516795093335816.post-12713357835348710602010-02-15T19:09:00.000-08:002010-02-17T21:12:33.346-08:00Prim Knickers and the Plaid SandwichI don't know if it was true love, my excitement at stumbling into a non-packed SoHo store on <a href="http://www.fashionsnightout.com/">Fashion's Night Out</a>, or the shot of Wild Turkey the manager served me (probably that last one)--but way back in September, I got a winter coat.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3tdxhwTIOI/AAAAAAAAACg/nnUaVyFaPEg/s1600-h/Eva.gif"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 233px; height: 310px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3tdxhwTIOI/AAAAAAAAACg/nnUaVyFaPEg/s320/Eva.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439044080435929314" border="0" /></a>The <a href="http://www.dunderdon.com/products-ladies-outerwear.html">Eva Wool Check</a> from <a href="http://dunderdonblog.com/">Dunderdon</a> fits like it was tailor-made, keeps out 30 mph New York winds, and looks damn cute. It is also red and black plaid.<br /><br />Now I don't shy away from things I love just because everyone else loves them too. I'm on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1626814/story.jhtml">Team Jacob</a>, I request Single Ladies no matter the venue (even a Bushwick dive bar), and Omar is my favorite character from <a href="http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/the-wire/">The Wire</a>. But something about being pushed right up next to another person--sometimes two people--who are also wearing red and black plaid on the subway is completely demoralizing. I'm the meat in a plaid sandwich.<br /><br />With the plethora of red tartan that's already out there, I need to get over this disloyalty fast. My theory is that we, as a society, can reach a plaid tipping point after which woodsy checks will become so common, my coat will be appreciated--not for its plaidness, but for the subtle fade of each square, the thickness of the wool, and the precision with which it was cut.<br /><br />If you care to help my jacket and I in our mission, these are my top tartan picks:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3te37D1blI/AAAAAAAAACw/oWmcuJ06ksk/s1600-h/Forever21Coat.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 164px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3te37D1blI/AAAAAAAAACw/oWmcuJ06ksk/s200/Forever21Coat.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439045289819598418" border="0" /></a><br />The <a href="http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog_name=FOREVER21&category_name=outwr&product_id=2065106826&cookie%5Ftest=1">wide collar coat</a> ($44) from <a href="http://forever21report.com/">Forever 21</a>.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3tgPHJDnlI/AAAAAAAAADA/uJrOolN8bxQ/s1600-h/HurleyCoat.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3tgPHJDnlI/AAAAAAAAADA/uJrOolN8bxQ/s200/HurleyCoat.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439046787711344210" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.tillys.com/tillys/variants.aspx?parentctg=&prod=154763301&ctlg=020_Girls&cid=1199&source=1&size=&network=CJ&affiliates=2178999">Hurley Winchester coat</a> ($54) from <a href="http://www.tillys.com/tillys/">Tilly's</a>.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3tiSDMILSI/AAAAAAAAADQ/P622708zHDA/s1600-h/Delia%27sCoat.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 141px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3tiSDMILSI/AAAAAAAAADQ/P622708zHDA/s200/Delia%27sCoat.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439049037213347106" border="0" /></a><br />And the <a href="http://store.delias.com/item.do?itemID=51842&siteID=J84DHJLQkR4-%2AJYsGN2aLIxNx3exCh4Afg&opactive=gnav">Delia's Keegan coat</a> ($50).Prim Knickershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00607614350714003829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2468516795093335816.post-56692807244412818222010-02-10T15:09:00.000-08:002010-02-11T19:35:27.500-08:00Prim Knickers and the Ministry of Silly Walks<span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);">Hello and welcome! </span><br /><span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><br />For the past two years I've been <a style="color: rgb(255, 102, 102);" href="http://shoetube.wordpress.com/author/wtoth/">eBay blogger</a> and blogger-in-chief at </span><a style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(255, 102, 102);" href="http://www.shoetube.wordpress.com/">Shoetube</a><span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);">. Wonder woman that she is, she's posting photos of her accessorizing prowess to raise money for the <a href="http://www.theuniformproject.com/home/about_akanksha.html">Akanksha Foundation</a>.<br /><br />I'm completely entranced by the project, namely the way Sheena layers on cool legwear (so much so that I wrote about it for <a href="http://beauty.ivillage.com/slideshow/beauty-style/13-ways-to-transform-your-look-with-leggings/the_uniform_projects_sheena_ma.html">iVillage</a>).<br /><br />Naturally, when I saw a pair of chunky knit tights at <a href="http://nycelegance.com/">Elegance</a> that reminded me of a Sheena pair, I grabbed them. <span style="font-style: italic;">Who cares if they're one-size-fits-all and not especially stretchy? They're cute!</span><br /><br />The next morning I ripped them open (no, I didn't wash them first... I know, I know) and pulled them on under a black sweater dress. Very Sheena-ish. They felt soft and warm and didn't squeeze my stomach or create any rolls. Time to convert to one-size-fits-all clothes forever! Until the crotch and waistband slowly crept down my body during my walk from the train to work. They continued this behavior all day, forcing frequent reverse wedgie stops in the bathroom. And finally on the way home, they dropped.<br /><br />I was still seven blocks from my apartment when suddenly, the crotch was at my knees, the waistband at my thighs. Luckily, my coat just covered the wreckage.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3OPUvwbe5I/AAAAAAAAACQ/g-jgIDFrvzI/s1600-h/ministry-of-silly-walks-1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3OPUvwbe5I/AAAAAAAAACQ/g-jgIDFrvzI/s320/ministry-of-silly-walks-1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436846761746070418" border="0" /></a><br />The whole mess would be at my ankles the second I stopped walking, so I went faster. They kept on sinking until I was channeling John Cleese and the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqhlQfXUk7w">Ministry of Silly Walks</a>, taking huge speed steps, laughing uncontrollably and looking much, much crazier than if I had just stopped to pull the damn things up.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3ORZs0AuZI/AAAAAAAAACY/T6_EoTeauxU/s1600-h/base_media.jpeg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 180px; height: 180px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hR4x9l6sNsg/S3ORZs0AuZI/AAAAAAAAACY/T6_EoTeauxU/s320/base_media.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436849045878389138" border="0" /></a><br />Still, they are comfy, so I kept them and took them in.
